EU Nears Record DMA Fine Against Google Over Search Dominance
The European Union is preparing to impose a record fine against Alphabet's Google for allegedly favoring its own services in search results. German newspaper Handelsblatt reports the penalty could reach a high triple-digit million euro amount, marking the largest sanction under the Digital Markets Act (DMA).
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will make the final decision before the summer recess. The case, opened in March 2025, examines whether Google manipulated search rankings to divert traffic to its proprietary services at the expense of competitors.
Brussels emphasizes compliance over financial penalties, with spokesperson Thomas Regnier stating negotiations continue but warning of swift escalation if talks fail. The move comes amid heightened transatlantic tensions following recent EU-US trade developments.
